A New Kingdom
In the Bible, Jesus gave several key commands that guide how His followers should live. Here’s a summary of His main commands:
1. Love God: Jesus commanded His followers to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength (Matthew 22:37, Mark 12:30). This is the greatest commandment and the foundation for all other commands.
2. Love Your Neighbor: Jesus taught that the second greatest command is to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39, Mark 12:31). He emphasized that love should extend to everyone, including enemies (Matthew 5:44).
3. Repent and Believe: Jesus called people to repent (turn away from sin) and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15). Repentance is necessary for entering the Kingdom of God.
4. Follow Me: Jesus invited people to follow Him, taking up their cross and living according to His example and teachings (Matthew 16:24, Luke 9:23). This command involves a commitment to discipleship and obedience.
5. Go and Make Disciples: After His resurrection, Jesus commanded His followers to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey all He had commanded (Matthew 28:19-20).
6. Forgive Others: Jesus emphasized the importance of forgiveness, commanding His followers to forgive others as God has forgiven them (Matthew 6:14-15, Mark 11:25).
7. Be Humble: Jesus commanded His followers to be humble, to serve others, and not to seek status or power (Matthew 23:11-12, Mark 9:35).
8. Do to Others as You Would Have Them Do to You: Known as the Golden Rule, Jesus taught that we should treat others the way we would want to be treated (Matthew 7:12, Luke 6:31).
9. Pray: Jesus commanded His followers to pray regularly, offering a model prayer in the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). He also encouraged persistence in prayer (Luke 18:1-8).
10. Seek First the Kingdom of God: Jesus instructed His followers to prioritize the Kingdom of God above all else, trusting that God will provide for their needs (Matthew 6:33).
11. Be Peacemakers: Jesus called His followers to be peacemakers, promoting reconciliation and peace (Matthew 5:9).
12. Keep My Commands: Jesus emphasized the importance of obedience, telling His followers that those who love Him will keep His commandments (John 14:15, John 15:10).
In sum, Jesus’ commands focus on love, humility, faithfulness, and making disciples. He called His followers to live lives marked by service, forgiveness, and a deep devotion to God.
